SAGE, an early 1960s air-defense system, was located in some thirty “direction centers” strategically placed around the country to provide complete radar coverage for the United States against airborne attacks. The consoles (above) were designed for use by ordinary airmen and established the technology of human-computer interaction using screens and light-pens in place of punched cards or the clunky teletypes of previous systems.
